Night Sounds

Ghost sounds in the house –
Scratchings, squeakings, scamperings –
Mice between the walls.

Sleet

Sleet’s brittle rattle
Patters against the window
Inside: warm and safe.

Vacuuming

Post-Christmas cleanup:
A carpet of pine needles
In the living room!

Cat III

Cold winter morning
The Forbidden Closet door
Doesn’t wake the cat.

Cricket

Frosty autumn night
The sound of chirping crickets
Creeps into the hearth.

Meal Moths

Uninvited guests
Moth wings leave a trace of dust
In winter pantries.

Snow

The year’s first snowfall
The cat bats at the window
To catch the snow birds.

Evening Guests

Autumn’s early dusk
Shadows standing on the porch
Wait to be let in.

Rowhouse

A sign on the door
Behind security bars:
“Welcome to our home.”
