A Long Winter’s Nap

Winter makes her bed
Laying a blanket of snow
Over sheets of ice.

Cold Morning

Bitter winter wind
Steals the steaming clouds of breath
Right under my nose.

Pierced by falcon claws
Red feathers on the white snow
A cardinal sin.

The year’s first snowfall
The cat bats at the window
To catch the snow birds.

Author’s Note

Dear Miss Havisham:
The wedding and you – both off.
Sincerely, Charles.

Each suburban lawn
A page in fall’s manuscript
Burnished with gold leaves.
