October Sky

Low afternoon sun
Lazing in an auburn haze
Henna tints the hills.

Hot afternoon breeze
Whispering in autumn’s voice
Dry leaves scrape the street.

Sleek cedar waxwings
Murmur in the mulberries
Drowsy afternoon.

April Showers

Rainy afternoon
The cat checks each windowsill
For spring’s missing sun.

The first warbler’s song
Sets the leaflets tingling
April afternoon.

Dim afternoon light
Snow heaped against the window
Turns day to evening.

Slanting rays of light
Filtered through the yellow leaves
Turn green grass to gold.
