Snow Birds

Late winter evening
Snow descending like white birds
Coming home to roost.

Winter morning fog
Ghosts walk between ghosts of trees
Distant in the dawn.

Sleet’s brittle rattle
Patters against the window
Inside: warm and safe.

Ice II

Twigs encased in ice
Rattle like an abacus
Counting days till spring.

The day after snow
Yesterday’s enchanting flakes
Fodder for shovels.

A little bonus haiku, so I can participate in WordPress.com’s Post A Day 2011:

One post every day

Pregnant winter clouds
Salt truck drivers stamp their feet
Waiting for the snow.

Birch Trees

Winter tats her lace
Delicate white traceries
Birches in the snow.
