Serenity

Deep reflecting pond
A watercolor painting
Of a summer day.

Seamstress

Long needles of ice
Stitch the open water up
On a winter pond.

Frog

Covered in duckweed
Just above the waterline
A pair of gilt eyes.

Lakeside

Two geese flying low
Descend toward their reflections
Evening approaches.

Swans

Quiet winter pond
Swans sail on their reflections
Through the melting ice.

Koan

When the frog jumped in
Basho’s venerable pond,
Which one made the sound?

My perhaps irreverent response to one of the most famous haiku ever written, the “frog pond” of Basho:

Old pond
A frog jumps in…
The sound of water.

Mist

Curls of autumn mist
Rising from the lake at dawn
The water exhales.
