Palimpsest

Fallen plum blossoms
Translucent on wet pavement
The day after rain.

Jewelweed

Pale green jewelweed
Silverplated by the dew
Early May morning.

Kale

Green and purple leaves
Whorled into a labyrinth
Ornamental kale.

Songbird

Scarlet cardinal
The bright heart of a bare tree
Throbbing with a song.

Fog

Winter morning fog
Ghosts walk between ghosts of trees
Distant in the dawn.

Vacuuming

Post-Christmas cleanup:
A carpet of pine needles
In the living room!

Birch Trees

Winter tats her lace
Delicate white traceries
Birches in the snow.

Branched

Winter trees reach up
Long fingers brush the gray clouds
Tickling the sky.

Transience

Sycamore bark sheds
The lovers’ carved initials
Falling down to earth.

Treasured

The wind combs the grass
Tosses the last leaves aside
Seeking fall’s lost gold.
