A Haiku Each Day

Sixty-two hundred and five Syllables a year.

Archive for Songbirds

Spring Song

Ersatz harbingers
Starlings imitate robins
Over city streets.

Recycling Day

Ice on the sidewalks
A discarded Christmas tree
Shelters the sparrows.

Festivities

Early Christmas treats
Red finches pluck the berries
From a holly wreath.

Incarnadine

Ripe nightshade berries
Robins stain their yellow bills
With bright crimson juice.

Gilt

Chirping goldfinches
Rival the sunflower’s hue
Late-summer garden.

Hiatus II

Long days sick in bed
The noisy sparrow fledglings
Flutter in the eaves.

Waxwings

Sleek cedar waxwings
Murmur in the mulberries
Drowsy afternoon.

Mimic

Whoops and beeps and whirrs
Mockingbirds sing car alarms
Over city streets.

Blues

Miniature lagoon
Half of a robin’s egg shell
Brimming with spring rain.

Flit

Micro-mockingbird
Flickering between treetops
Blue-gray gnatcatcher.

In honor of my 238th life list bird.
